Recently, near the Juja dam in Kiambu, three people—among them a university student—drowned while swimming.
The incident on January 18, in which a man and his female friend perished when their automobile slipped into the deep waters of a dam, is remembered in light of the recent tragedies. For weeks, the story dominated national headlines.
The people claim that although the latest cases have not made headlines, it does not change the reality that they were unfortunate and premature.
Wananchi Reporting was informed by a diver who has participated in rescue operations at the dam that there is still a risk to revelers from an uncontrolled area of the dam.
“This October, there was a case involving a male university student who came to enjoy himself with some friends before something tragic happened,” the diver stated.
The Kiambu County administration has sent out 37 divers and firefighters to staff the more than twelve dams inside the county. The diver is one of them.
The student’s body was seen floating in the sea, the diver reported.
“One of the young men drowned while swimming in the waters after partying and having fun near the dam,” the diver reported.
“After he drowned, his buddies left. We located his phone and clothes at the dam’s edge,” the diver reported.
The diver stated that young individuals visiting the uncontrolled portions of the dam for pleasure made up the majority of those who drowned.
According to him, divers pulled four individuals out of the water just in time to prevent them from drowning.
Locals and company owners believe that the January incident did not deter partygoers who still frequent the location for entertainment.
There have been some occurrences recently, the administration of the local entertainment venue Titanic Beach Resort (Kariani) revealed to Wananchi Reporting.
A facility manager stated, “I am not sure about the precise numbers, but I can confirm that there have been drowning cases ever since the January incident.”
The manager said, “We have guards manning specific areas of the dam to ensure our customers are safe because, as a management, we are concerned about the area surrounding the spot.”
On weekends, the dam is a popular destination for partygoers.
