A police officer in Ruiru town, Kiambu County, was taken into custody when people in the community stopped his attempted heist.
The Inspector-ranking officer fled for safety as a mob yelling for his blood started pursuing him, but he was apprehended by police officers stationed at the Equity Bank Ruiru branch.
Before an alarm was raised, the suspect, who was carrying a pistol, robbed a customer of an M-Pesa business of Ksh. 54,000, according to Alex Shikondi, the boss of Ruiru police.
The public pursued the alleged robber after hearing distress calls from the M-Pesa operator. The suspect pulled a gun, fired shots into the air, and attempted to break into the Equity Bank, where he was apprehended.
The officer’s identification was not immediately disclosed by the police.
