From 2000 KSH to Entrepreneurial Success: Unveiling the Journey of Building a Business on a Tight Budget

How to start a business with Ksh. 2000.

With the current economic times, it will be better to have a business or two to sustain the level of life one was used to like five to ten years ago. But since we cannot move the clock back, we have to adapt to current times. We need to at least have a side hustle or two running to avoid financial constraints. I interacted with an entrepreneur Derrick (not his real name). He completed studying for his Diploma in Electricity engineering, but just like many youths in our country right now, he was not able to secure a job.

Derrick went a step further to get employed at a local hotel, but after doing the job for around two weeks, he noticed employment was not a bed of roses for him. There are days he says he went home without pay, other times the pay could not cater to all his needs. Derrick says a force of nature pushed him to start his business.

This is a point in life that needs discipline, consistency, and perseverance. He first resigned from his job and went to search for a perfect spot where he could set up his business. He had already concluded that the business he could do was sell chapatis because that is what he had been employed to do at the previous place of business.

He found a junction where he set up his business a table that held enough space to put his jiko and dishes where he placed cooked chapatis. He used around 1700 to 2000 to purchase the ‘jiko’, cooking oil dough, and charcoal. He is used to kneed the flour at his home then at around eleven he carries the flour and his items to the place of sale and starts cooking as he sells. In the beginning, he used to sell two flours but currently times he sells around four to five pieces of flour. He is happy he dared and he encourages jobless individuals to try the skill if it is something that interests them and it’s something they can do.

He also says that there are many businesses to explore and your interests matter do not start a business because someone else did but, start a business because it is what interests you, and, this way even when times and the situation seem tougher you will get  tough and endure these times
