Prof. Kithure Kidniki, the Interior Cabinet Secretary, has proclaimed Monday, November 13, 2023, as a public holiday to encourage participation in the national tree-growing initiative.
President William Ruto will spearhead the nation’s tree-growing initiative following his administration’s audacious goal of planting 10 billion trees by 2032, according to a gazette notification dated November 6th, according to Prof. Kindiki.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 3 of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares Monday, 13th November 2023, a public holiday in which the public shall be engaged in tree growing countrywide,” the notice begins.
“Towards the Growth of Fifteen (15) Billion Trees: Kenya’s Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Programme” includes the exercise. His Excellency (Dr.) William Samoei Ruto will preside over the tree planting ceremony at a specially designated national venue.”
Everyone living in Kenya as well as members of the public are expected to take part in the tree-planting event, which will also be marked throughout the 47 counties that Cabinet Secretaries and Governors oversee.
The Cabinet’s decision to preserve the nation from the catastrophic effects of climate change, made on Friday, November 3, 2023, in Mombasa, prompted the declaration of November 13 as a public holiday.
National exams that are scheduled on that day will go ahead as usual in the interim.
