Evans Odiambo Kidero, a former governor of Nairobi, and the Kenya Revenue Authority have resolved a tax dispute totaling 427 million shillings.
According to the terms of the agreement, the former Nairobi boss would now be compelled to pay Ksh.19.4 million shillings.
The Ksh. 4247 million was cut in half to Ksh. 19.4 million, which contained the principal tax of 12,038,982 million shillings, a penalty of 2,407,796 shillings, and interest of 5,036.405 million shillings.
Kidero had been told to pay 427,269,795.00 million shillings in taxes.
The controversy started in 2016 when Kidero received a 680-million-shilling tax bill from the KRA that included fines and interest after the KRA reviewed his business and financial records from January 2011 to December 2015.
At the tax appeals tribunal, he contested the taxation, arguing that 423 million Shillings of the money were given as campaign contributions.
After the tribunal found in Kidero’s favor, the taxman appealed to the Supreme Court, which decided he lacked proof that the money originated from his campaign accounts and let the KRA collect the disputed sum.
