One of the largest growers and packers of avocados, Granot International Company, has begun conducting business in Kenya.

One-third of Israel’s total avocado yield is produced by Granot, which also runs the country’s biggest avocado packing facility. It is one of the biggest cooperatives in the world, with a yearly income of more than USD 1.5 billion. Twenty companies and corporations make up Granot Cooperative, which is primarily concerned with agriculture and the requirements of Kibbutzim, their residents, and their towns.

The Israeli company has started growing avocados in Kenya to develop a value-added supply chain for both domestic and international markets.  On a 400-hectare property, they have already planted 55,000 avocado trees, to eventually plant 300,000. The farm is situated in Naivasha, Ndabibi County, in Kenya. They will be able to guarantee year-round avocado output for their new marketing division thanks to the Ndabibi farm.

The initiative increases the production of avocados across more than 1,250 hectares in Tanzania and Mozambique. The company’s production center and premier agricultural hub will both be located in Ndabibi. The farm will improve its ability to produce both short-cycle crops for the local market and high-value crops intended primarily for export.

The farm, which will include horticulture operations, will employ roughly 2,000 people at its busiest; this will give local communities access to job and training opportunities. They have joined forces with Agris, an investment holding company that manages more than $100 million in sub-Saharan Africa.

Israeli Ambassador Michael Lotem presided over the event along with the Nakuru county CECs for Agriculture Leonard Bor, Infrastructure Eng Michael Kamau, and Trade Stephen Kuria. According to Ambassador Lotem, the business has built up a sizable platform for both casual and permanent employment.

Susan Kihika, the governor of Nakuru County, stated her willingness to work with Granot International to introduce technology and value addition to the crop’s growth during an earlier this month meeting with the ambassador. She said that avocado cultivation can increase the county’s economy.

She continued by saying that Granot International’s partnership with Nakuru County will provide farmers in the county with an opportunity to learn about technology, certified seedlings, better farming practices, packaging techniques, and marketing to make the crop the county’s top earner of income.
