Time Magazine, an American magazine, named President William Ruto one of the 100 global leaders who will be leading the charge on climate change in 2023.
President Ruto was described as “a leader on green investment” by the magazine following Kenya’s hosting of the first-ever Africa Climate Summit, which raised $23 billion (Ksh. 3.5 trillion) in money to be used for projects throughout the continent.
After receiving the award, the head of state spoke to Time Magazine and urged cooperation in the fight against climate change, arguing that it is an international issue that cannot be resolved by “dividing the world into polluters and victims.”
“Africa can supply green products, inexpensive renewable energy, conservation, and climate restoration.” However, that can only occur if we consider all people to be part of a shared future and burden, and if we direct economic activity where it makes the most sense in order to promote human development and combat climate change as fast, inexpensively, and successfully as possible,” the speaker said.
Africa has the natural resources and assets, young labor force, and renewable energy potential to alleviate the growing global labor crisis while simultaneously offering cost-competitive green products and services.
The climate list feature was introduced a few days after President Ruto led the nation in a nationwide tree-planting event that, according to Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, resulted in the planting of over 150 million trees nationwide.
